South Carolina’s Education Lottery has bolstered the state’s funding for scholarships and other initiatives by more than $3 billion over the past 12 years. For the past five years, Paula Harper Bethea has been at the helm of the agency which runs the state lottery. On this program, she shares her perspective on how South Carolina is addressing the education disparity between rural and urban communities, the rising cost of a college education and her ideas for sustaining lottery sales to continue raising money for learning programs. Bob Morgan of the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce and Erik Spanberg of the Charlotte Business Journal join the conversation.

The Carolinas continue to reap the benefits of the re-shoring of manufacturing and the rapid expansion of the aviation and automotive sectors in the region. With this growth comes the challenge of supplying well-trained workers who are up to the task of operating in advanced manufacturing facilities. On this program, Bob Morgan of the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce and Dr. Sonny White of Midlands Technical College discuss the collaborative efforts of businesses and educators to address the skills gap in North and South Carolina, as well as the work of changing false perceptions around careers in manufacturing.


Traction for Roads

Whether it is clearing congestion or connecting rural communities to urban centers, efforts to improve the roads and highways in the Carolinas seem to be gaining some traction. North Carolina’s state transportation chief has proposed a new formula for allocating road funding , and South Carolina lawmakers recently approved a $500 million bond package meant to tackle some of the Palmetto state’s most critical transportation infrastructure challenges. On this program, Martin Marietta Materials, Inc. President and CEO Ward Nye compares the Carolinas’ road-building programs with those of Texas, and discusses the ways states are raising cash to pay for construction. Bob Morgan of the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce and Deepal Eliatamby of Alliance Consulting Engineers join the conversation.
