As President of the South Carolina Technical College System, Dr. Jimmie Williamson is working to change the perception of two-year colleges, especially among parents.   Companies in the state’s bustling manufacturing and information technology sectors are ready to pay good salaries for well-trained students who graduate from technical colleges, along with health care providers and other high-growth industries. Meanwhile, business leaders are collaborating to affect change in education policy and ensure a pipeline of qualified employees. On this program, we discuss the transition to better jobs through education and training with Dr. Williamson, Bill Anderson of MeckEd and Grady Johnson of SC Biz News.

State of the Media

Posted on: January 11th, 2013 by admin

Our traditional sources of news are in a state of transformation. In some cities, newspapers have been shuttered. Other newsrooms, both print and television, have shrunk dramatically, leaving fewer reporters and editors to provide in-depth coverage of a community. Still, a plethora of news and information is readily available on the internet and through social media channels. On this program, we discuss the current state of the media with current and former journalists including the ability of news consumers to judge the accuracy of reporting and the role of the media in politics and public policy debates. Our panel includes John Alexander of Elon University School of Law, Frank Aycock of Appalachian State University, Grant Jackson of the Columbia Chamber of Commerce, Grady Johnson of SC Biz News.

Paralyzing Politics

Posted on: July 15th, 2011 by admin

While boisterous political pundits occupy airtime on cable channels and sling words across blogs on the internet, Furman University President Rod Smolla witnesses first-hand the impression this discourse has on young people. On this program, the constitutional scholar shares his thoughts on the downside of social media, the transformative force of the internet on politics, and the rising cost of a college education. Robert Orr of the N.C. Institute for Constitutional Law and Grady Johnson of S.C. Business Publications join the conversation.
